Foundational Knowledge
At Barnwell Academy, foundational knowledge and skills are at the heart of our curriculum. We believe that every child deserves the opportunity to develop secure foundations that enable them to achieve, thrive and succeed. By ensuring that essential knowledge and skills are explicitly taught, carefully sequenced and regularly revisited, we equip our pupils with the confidence and understanding they need to become successful, independent learners.
Our curriculum is ambitious, inclusive and carefully structured to ensure that learning builds progressively over time. We identify the essential knowledge, skills and vocabulary pupils need to succeed in each subject and ensure that these are taught in a logical and meaningful sequence. New learning builds upon what pupils already know, enabling them to make connections, deepen their understanding and apply their knowledge with increasing confidence.
Across Barnwell, we prioritise the development of essential foundational knowledge and skills, including:
- Spoken language, communication and vocabulary development.
- Early reading, phonics and reading fluency.
- Foundational writing skills, including handwriting, spelling, sentence construction, punctuation and grammar.
- Core mathematical knowledge, number sense and fluency.
- Positive learning behaviours, including attention, concentration, independence, resilience and reflection.
These foundations underpin learning across every subject and year group. We recognise that securing these essential building blocks is fundamental to enabling pupils to access increasingly complex knowledge and achieve success throughout their education.
Teaching and Learning
At Barnwell, we recognise that high-quality teaching is the most important factor in securing strong foundations. Our approach combines clear explanations, explicit instruction, effective modelling, guided practice and opportunities for independent application.
Teachers carefully consider pupils' prior knowledge and introduce new learning in manageable steps, ensuring that pupils develop secure understanding before moving on to more complex concepts.
Our approach to teaching and learning ensures that:
- Prior knowledge is regularly revisited and activated to strengthen connections with new learning.
- Essential knowledge and vocabulary are explicitly taught and clearly explained.
- New concepts are introduced in carefully sequenced, manageable steps.
- Teachers model learning effectively and provide appropriate scaffolding.
- Pupils have frequent opportunities to practise, rehearse and apply their learning.
- Feedback and assessment are used to identify misconceptions and strengthen understanding.
- Learning is revisited over time to support retention and long-term memory.
- Pupils are increasingly supported to apply their knowledge independently and confidently.
We recognise that purposeful practice is essential for developing fluency and automaticity. Through regular opportunities for retrieval, rehearsal and application, pupils strengthen their understanding and develop the confidence to use their knowledge across different contexts.
Assessment and Responsive Teaching
Assessment is an integral part of teaching and learning at Barnwell. Teachers routinely check pupils' understanding, identify gaps in knowledge and respond promptly to misconceptions.
Through effective questioning, observation, discussion and assessment, teachers adapt their teaching to ensure that pupils receive the support and challenge they need.
Assessment is purposeful and proportionate, focusing on improving learning rather than generating unnecessary workload.
Inclusion and Keeping Up
At Barnwell, we have high expectations for every pupil. We recognise that children acquire and secure foundational knowledge at different rates and that some pupils require additional time, practice or support to achieve success.
Our commitment to inclusion means that we identify barriers to learning early and respond through high-quality adaptive teaching, carefully planned scaffolding and timely, targeted intervention.
Where pupils require additional support, this is designed to strengthen essential knowledge and skills while maintaining access to an ambitious curriculum. Our aim is to ensure that pupils are supported to keep up with their learning wherever possible, rather than being left to catch up later.
We believe that strong foundations are particularly important for pupils with additional needs or those who may face barriers to learning. By providing the right support at the right time, we ensure that every child has the opportunity to experience success and make meaningful progress.
Developing Positive Learning Behaviours
We recognise that successful learning depends not only on what pupils know but also on how they approach learning.
At Barnwell, positive learning behaviours are explicitly taught, modelled and consistently reinforced. We encourage pupils to listen carefully, concentrate, practise, persevere when faced with challenges and take increasing responsibility for their learning.
Through consistent expectations, supportive relationships and a positive learning environment, we help pupils develop the confidence, resilience and independence needed to become successful lifelong learners.
The Barnwell Commitment
Our commitment to foundational knowledge ensures that pupils develop the essential building blocks needed for future success.
Through an ambitious, carefully sequenced and inclusive curriculum, supported by consistently high-quality teaching, we ensure that pupils know more, remember more and can do more over time.
At Barnwell, strong foundations are not simply the starting point for learning; they are the building blocks upon which every child's future success is built.
