Barnwell Academy

Safeguarding

Barnwell Academy recognises its responsibilities for Safeguarding and ensuring that our students are kept safe from harm. Our safeguarding statement outlines the school’s position and should be read in conjunction with the school’s Child Protection and Safeguarding Policy. Our policy applies to all staff, governors and volunteers working in the school. There are five main elements:
  • Ensuring we practice safer recruitment in checking the suitability of staff and volunteers to work with children;
  • Raising awareness of child protection issues and equipping children with the skills needed to keep them safe;
  • Ensuring that staff are aware of the procedures for identifying and reporting cases, or suspected cases, of abuse.
  • Our staff are regularly trained, vigilant for signs of harm, and are confident about applying our policies to any potential safeguarding issues.

Barnwell Academy takes safeguarding very seriously. We ensure that safeguarding is a key priority in all aspects of school life and that safeguarding is a key part of our curriculum content.

Safeguarding is the responsibility of all members of our school community.

Sunderland Safeguarding Partnership

The Sunderland Safeguarding Children Partnership (SSCP) is a multi-agency partnership which brings together agencies who work to safeguard and promote the welfare of children and young people across Sunderland. The aim of the partnership is to coordinate what is done by each body represented on the board, and ensuring the effectiveness of that work. Ultimately in doing our job at the SSCP we want to make a positive difference to children, young people, their families and their communities through our work in partnership.

Within the Partnership there are three statutory safeguarding partners:

  • Sunderland City Council
  • North East and North Cumbria NHS
  • Northumbria Police.

These three agencies are responsible for developing the multi-agency safeguarding arrangements (MASA) for the city that will guide how they will work together, and with other relevant agencies, to safeguard and promote the welfare of children and young people.
